The project, initially submitted as a response to the RIBA's Forgotten Spaces 2011 competition, focuses on the river Don, north of Kelham Island in Sheffield. This area, along Sheffield's major river, connects a string of unique local micro breweries, and is a green corridor and natural resource but is inaccessible and hidden along a large part of its length. The competition entry acted as a catalyst for Studio Polpo, along with PhD student and architectural journalist Steve Parnell, to explore this stretch of river and start to suggest a series of interventions along its length such as fishing platforms, bird-watching hides, childrens play areas and a kayakers' new boat-house and brewery connected by stretches of walkway. We aim to take the ideas research from this starting point into further explorations and actual interventions, and have now set this up as the River Commons group, check on progress at the Twitter feed below. |
